1981 E-350 AC Compressor always on
The AC compressor always runs, even if the system is off, in vent mode, or AC mode. Eventually all the lines start frosting up.
I even unplugged the compressor and it still ran! Seems the clutch is stuck on.
My question is, can the clutch be removed without discharging the system?
Some replacement AC pumps are sold with out the electric clutch, so the clutch assembly is available.
Loosen the bolt that holds the pulley on before you take the belt off or you may have trouble getting the bolt loose. If the pulley still tries to turn with the belt still connected, It is probably the pulley bearing turning. Is it does, connect the clutch electrical, turn the ignition switch to run without starting the engine, and turn the AC on. That will engage the clutch and should hold everything good and tight to loosen the bolt holding the clutch plate on.
You will need to set your clutch plate AIR GAP once you have it back together before starting the engine. Actually I glanced at a service manual for the York compressor and I didn't see anything about setting the air gap, but I just glanced at the manual.
Here is the manual in PDF.. Make sure this is your model.

You can replace just the bearing
