I need a little advice. We are on our first long roadtrip with the 2017 and camper. Made the journey to Santa Fe, NM yesterday from Austin. The truck performed great. I was amazed at how the adaptive cruise control and engine brakes worked together with the trailer in the hills/mountains in New Mexico. Wow - really made the drive easier.
A couple of times the climbs were steep enough for the truck to gear down to 4th gear and run up the turbo boost and RPMs for a while. Then the jet engine sounding cooling system kicked in. It cooled the engine much faster than my 2011 did. Very impressive. My engine temps never topped 225 and my trans temps never topped 226.
Here is the issue... I went to check fluids this morning and noticed there is an oily residue on the right side of my engine compartment on some but not all of the components. Just small specs nothing coating the thing. Underneath I could see where there were residue of drops on various places on the under carriage. All of my fluids (Oil, Trans, and Cooling) are just perfect.
What I did notice was a large drip coming off of the underside of the oil fill cap. I took it off, cleaned it up and put it back on tightly. So I wonder if during the high RPM runs yesterday, I was getting blow back out of my oil fill cap/spout. this is closest to where I had most of the residue/drips. I put it back on tightly but I am not sure.
We are touring around Santa Fe today and up to Los Alamos so I'll keep an eye on it but I would love to hear people's advice.
What does the residue smell like? engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid? The smell test is usually one of my troubleshooting techniques that narrows down which system it came from.

I thought about that - but I have a horrible sense of smell. I can't tell a difference between oil and transmission fluid. I don't believe it is coolant - doesn't smell like that.
That was what I thought. I found the residue after I checked my oil and transmission fluid levels. I didn't really pay attention as to how tight or loose they were when I checked the levels. So I don't know... However this is my theory or either the oil fill cap wasn't on tight.
I made sure all three were tight and I drove the truck all day (no towing) and I have not seen any new residue anywhere. I am wondering if I should take to the local dealer tomorrow before I make my run with the 5er up to Durango.

All that will cost you is time and the dividend is peace of mind. There have been reports of leaking oil filters. I believe these were from the factory.
