Long Start Cold

Hey Guys,

I need some advice here. I "Bulletproofed" my f-250 Super-duty last summer and she ran great for a time, actually she is still running great, except for one thing that is driving me crazy. On a cold start it turns over until the oil pressure builds up. Then she will crank and runs fine, also starts normally after warm, turns over a couple of times and cranks.
I have oil in the filter housing, have replaced the seal at the bottom of it. Just pulled the oil rails off and replaced the seals on them, and a new IPR seal and filter. I am still having the problem, F.I.C.M. voltage has been fluctuating between 45 and 46 vdc. I have a P300 and P308 code.

I haven't really considered Injectors because it is idling smooth as silk and has great power.

I'm at a loss, I know there is a mountain of knowledge here I hope someone has an idea of which direction I should head next.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,

BigJohn

It's possible the high pressure oil pump resivoir is draining down over a period of hours. That commonly is caused by leaking seals in the high pressure oil pump. What year is the truck? The pump design changed over the years. Some are more prone to this than others. It's simple to check, just park the truck overnight with the rear elevated up on a curb or slope or some ramps etc. The oil will stay toward the front of the resivoir and leak down less, truck will start sooner. Elevating the front overnight will cause the oil to rest in the rear of the resivoir against the pump, this will cause it to leak more and have a corresponding longer crank.

There are some other possibile causes but this is good place to start checking.

You need to address that FICM voltage.....it's borderline concerning and could very well be tied to those codes.

Rusty has the right idea.....do you own and 03 or early 04?

Edit......I see you own an 06, next time it's been sitting overnight pull the top fuel filter and see if the housing is full.

Could still be something on the HPO side

Get the FICM fixed, your voltage is too low. Anything under 47 is bad. Might be time to just look at the pump, not saying it's bad, but a seal could have failed, etc. FICM definitely though is bad.

I think the original TSB from Ford said below 45v was bad on the FICM output. I agree 45 point something should be watched (likely to drop further) and I'd get a new relay for it but it isn't toast yet.
