So I think that I am about to wrap this filter/fluid change. I installed the filter until it bottomed out into the bore. The filter is at an angle to the valve body and the cylinder on the filter is not coaxial to the bore, they are at an angle to each other. I am not confident that it will seal completely.
If I push it in so that it is parallel to the valve body, it will fall out of the bore.
Look at the old filter. Is the o-ring missing? If so,remove the new filter and look up into the bore.Reach up in and remove the old o-ring.Re-install the new filter w/ it's new o-ring (lube it with atf) and you'll feel a very nice positive seat and it won't fall out.

The old seal was a bugger to get because it is hard and in tight.
I pushed it in until it had a firm seat. That is when I noticed the angles. I take it that this must be OK?

I've not done a trans service on an e4od but almost all ford transmission will have the filter sit at an angle because they aren't mounted. The trans pan will hold it in place.
Well the good thing is that if it falls off, and the park/stalling issue happens, it's not like you have to drain ALL the fluid or open up the trans case to put it back on.
