Engine intake air filter
Maintaining personal 2000 F150 and 2000 Taurus vehicles, examined engine intake airfilters, both vehicles at 50K miles.
Regarding either vehicle and comparing a new filter to the used filter, one would be hard pressed to see any difference, regarding cleanliness. Holding them up to a shoplight, the used filters would allow approximately 95% of the same amount of light to come through.
Is it a case where the intakes are located in ideal positions and minimal dust/debris can enter while underway? Or am I just being a tightwad, by feeling they are not dirty enough to warrant replacing. Maybe I am just lucky to live/drive in a relatively dust free area of a cool, damp coastal area?
We remember, in years past, when GM replaced worn motors in new cars which had less than 5,000 miles on them, while being operated in the dusty area of West Texas. It seems the cars were delivered with an improper gasket/seal atop the air cleaner package.

We have some customers that live in very dusty areas that need new air filters every couple oil changes and others that go years without needing to be replaced.
