Hi all,
I just found the site and it seems great. Here goes my question. My wifes '94 seems weak so I was going to check the compression. I just borrowed a friend's compression gauge, but I can't find what the compression should be. Does any have that info?
Well, I'm not an expert but I know you should look for all readings to be within 10% of each other. In my opinion:
Good compression - 160 and up
Used but still good - 140 to 160
Borderline - 120 - 140
Rebuild - 120 or less
I'm sure others have other opions but this has been my experience.
Hope this helps.
My Haynes manuel says that the compression shoud be a minimum of 101 psi on all cylinders. As noted, the other important factor is variation between cylinders. For reference, when I did mine earlier this summer, I got 140-160 psi in four of six, 40 psi in #6, and 60 psi in #2. Needless to say, I have a new engine now.
