I'm looking at buying a 99 superduty extracab PSD F350 4X4 6spd with 129000km (about 75000 miles). One thing that concerns me is when its stone cold (air temp is around 85) and the wait to start light goes out it spins over for a 3-4 count before firing up. When its warmed up it is still a little slower than you'd think, 2-3 count. Is this normal. My last deisel was a 6.9 8 years ago and I had lots of glow plug issues with it and my gut feeling is something is up or am I just being gunshy. It's do for an oil change, do these injectors run of oil pressure...could that be it?
The 1995 F-250 I have takes a few seconds to start cold, 2-3 seconds. I wouldn't be concerned unless it was longer than 4, maybe 5 or so. Make sure your low battery dash light is not flickering before you up the rpms driving away. At stop lights & signs too. The dragging turning engine over is real noticable so I expect you're ok.
Your 6.9L didn't require oil pressure to fire the injectors like the PSD's do. PSD's require about 500 psi to fire the injectors and can get as high as 3000 psi at WOT.

I'm with everybody on this one. My '02 takes a few spins to get cranked also. I have heard other PSD's crank as fast as you can turn the key. IMO every one has its own characteristics. Some crank fast, some slow, and every one I have heard running seems to sound a little different. Soooooo, as long as your batteries are fully charged, and the fuel filter is clean, I would'nt worry. Also, 146,000 miles is not that many miles for the PSD. With proper maintenance, this engine should be able to go 300,000 miles......or more. I say if you are comfortable with the deal and the truck shows no signs of abuse, you will be just fine.
