no dome light?

hi all, i have a 1979 F-100 with no working dome light. tested all fuses, ignition on as well as off and everything seems to be working. i tested for power at the actual light itself and there is nothing. i've also tried different bulbs and i even bought an LED one but alas nothing. any suggestions? maybe door switches...? also, a couple months back i installed a new radio

Make sure they are grounded to something

See if there's power at the switches.

The dome light should be turned on by opening either front door or by fully rotating the light switch on the dash counterclockwise. If you have no voltage at the dome lamp in either case and the controlling fuse is intact (be sure to check for voltage on both sides of the fuse) you will likely have to trace the circuit out to find out where the voltage is lost. The controlling fuse should be the same 15 amp that is for courtesy lamps. The installation of the radio should have no effect unless you did something to disturb the dome light circuit in the process of installing it.

If you get no power to the dome lamp, and the fuse is good, I'd bet on door switches. The door switches are sticky in my yellow truck, and work best if I snap them with my finger or thumb!

Sometimes the door switch wires rot off the connector. I remember chasing that one for a little till I pulled the switches out and found it.

Is there any power at the switches? One wire should be always hot 12V DC+.

I'm gonna guess you have ignition hot and headlights...

There's are two sources of power for the dome light. One is the light switch. If you turn the headlight switch, the dome light should come on. The other source are the door jamb switches. Both switches should have "always hot" to one side.

Check the door jamb switches for their hot. If the switches have power, the failure is on the dome light side.

To revive and bump this thread I am going to pardon hijack. I am doing the same thing replace the courtesy light as the contacts were broken off. I installed a new one on the sons F100 and no light. Cause no switches in the jams(guess they removed as they were stuck closed). Found the wire dangling when I installed a new glove box liner tonight, it is hot, as truck was idling. My ?'s will the courtesy light turn on without the switches hooked up or is it om a circuit that requires the switches to be present and functioning, can an anyone post a pic of what the wires look like with connectors for the switches, sons are just cut and taped. Thanks..Mo

ND what about a pic of what the door jam harness or at least the connectors to the switches look like. I am heading to the scrapyard right now to see if I can pick some up.
