@drdit92, the sticker for the 450 shows it has Adaptive Steering... did the 350 you test-drove also have it? If not, that would also make a difference in steering response along with the wide-track front axle.

It makes a difference in the steering effort, but not in the turning radius.

Agreed it won't change the actual circle, but it will certainly feel faster to the driver. My current Ram is 6 inches longer than the predecessor, but the faster steering ratio made it whip easily into tight turns even though the turning radius was slightly larger.

I'd go back to the dealer and offer them the price of what you would build. Basically tell them you aren't willing to pay for the items you don't want/need. All they can do is say no.

All of the 2017s that I've test driven have had the adaptive steering.

It does vary from state to state, but often the law reads warranty miles are based on "miles of useage", not actual odometer reading.

Most of these laws were obsoleted by the Lemon Laws, but the language carried forward. Massachusetts is one example, the Lemon Law clearly states coverage is 15000 miles of usage.

I don't know where in Indiana you are located but this dealer in Greendale has some good pricing on trucks in stock.

I can't see a dealership discounting a vehicle below their cost just cause you didn't want the options on the vehicle. Maybe if they were desperate to get rid of it and possibly if it was late model. Isn't one of the supposed value adds that a salesperson is to match you to the vehicle that best suits you?

If the original poster were to press on to a custom order with the same dealership, offering price for a car on the lot that is in their view ridiculous would not build confidence you'd stick around to pay for your custom order.

I suppose on the flip side if the original poster is going to go elsewhere to custom order, then I agree. I suppose I'm thinking, in many parts of the country there are not that many dealerships to work with in a short radius around your home/work. I guess you could **** them off one year, wait a year and try again with a different salesperson. Near a big city many more dealerships to shop.

I live near a big city, and shopped a number of dealerships. There were some that would not consider custom ordering a F-450. I suspect this had more to do with the salesperson I was dealing with rather than the management of the dealership.

Found a Lariat on a lot in town and drove it today. It's pretty loaded. When I first fired it up, there were 12 miles to empty. So, off we went to the nearest gas station. Had to make a U-turn to pull into it. It was wide enough to tempt me to go for it, though I don't think I could make that turn with my '15 F250. But, no traffic, so I gave it a whirl and I had several feet to spare. That's when my smile started and never left. Man, what a difference that front end makes. It's like you're driving a much smaller vehicle.

So, the window sticker shows that this truck was a custom order. Here it is:

This truck has 1255 miles on it. The sales guy had absolutely no idea why it had so many miles or why the guy who ordered it changed his mind and never took it. It has stuff I don't want, like the garage door openers, the FX4 package, the rear heated seats, the chrome package, etc. The dealership's website lists it at $75,420. I know since it's not been titled it's considered new, but can I ask for/expect a discount due to the mileage that's already there? Or, am I better off ordering one with what I want? I'm in no rush and don't need a 2017 right now. If I order, I might wait until late summer or think about ordering a 2018. Heck, the 450 might be too much truck for whatever fifth wheel I get, but I can see why people say if you're thinking about a 350 dually, go for the 450.

Thanks for any and all advice.
I bought my 450 on 5/31/17. Ordered it. Msrp was 70880. I paid 65058 plus tax.

Lariat. Lariat value pack. 5th wheel hitch prep.

Might be worth ordering imo.....

I looked at their website; they have a lot of F350s that look interesting and that 450. I may drive down there this weekend to check them out. Thanks! I'm in Indy, so about a 2 hour drive.

True enough; though I'm not sure how much interest they're going to get at that pricepoint. There are not a ton of well equipped 450s around here, but enough that I got to drive one. I would think if you're going to spend that much money on a truck, why not order exactly what you want versus settling for something that has items you'll never, ever use?

Exactly how I felt. Nearly all the ones that were available around where I live were Platinum. They are really nice, but we don't need all of those features. There was one white XL on a lot, but it sold before we got there, and neither of us really wanted it anyway, but we were interested in test driving it (get a feel for vinyl seats, plus could just get an aftermarket seat cover) to see if we could live without the three options we felt we did want. We have had no regrets from custom ordering.

So, I called my current auto insurance company; they would not even consider writing a policy for a 450. The biggest they would go (for a personal policy) was a one ton. For reasons unrelated to this, they are now my former insurance company. I moved over to Geico and also had them do a quote for a 450; it would increase my 6 month policy by $150 over my current 2015 F250 gasser. Not bad, IMO. So, going down to Greendale, IN next Monday to look at the large selection of 350 DRW, SRW and their one 450 Lariat.

You might want to double check. Agents that don't know better sometimes look at the F450 C&C vs the F450 pickup truck. Give them the VIN and have them run a quote. State Farm Mutual has no issue with mine.

x2 on the F450 C&C vs. F450 pickup. USAA wouldn't do a F450 C&C, but once they understood it was a pickup, they said it wouldn't be an issue to write a policy on one.

It's interesting; my former insurance company was Amica. The guy wouldn't even let me get to a VIN. He said anything over one ton (which I'm assuming a 450 is, since a 350 is a one ton) they wouldn't insure on a personal use basis. The Geico people didn't bat an eye. I used a VIN from the dealership I'm hoping to visit on Monday.
