Recently purchased an 01 Excursion with 32K miles from a friend whom works at a Ford dealer - was the owners son's car so the history of the vehicle is known and is good. Didn't buy the vehicle for the mpg's, bought it for what it is - a simply awesome do-it-all truck. Wife loves it! I tow a 27' travel trailer easily. My MPG's are around 10-11 around town, 8 when towing, and 13 to maybe 14 on the highway. I was wondering if any other owners have added simple aftermarket products to the V-10 motor that successfully increases mpg's. I am waiting for my K&N filter to arrive, and threw one of those "Fuel Master" magnets on the fuel line. The fuel master hasn't helped at all thus far. I was considering trying out one of those Tornado gadgets but have read nothing but negative reviews about it so I opted not to waste my money. Any other mods available to increase mpg's? How about tire pressure? I believe I am running 38 all around, whatever the door panel recommended to run. Seems low considering the max psi listed on the tire. What is a good pressure to run and will psi increase mpg's?
And you're right, air pressure will affect mpg....
but I've always considered my kidney's well being over the fuel mileage
I may up the air if I'm going on a long interstate trip where I know the roads will be better... but the secondary roads are too brutal for my 'fragile body' to keep the 55-60 lbs in them -
I usually run it more around 40-45 on our '03 4x4 6.0L...
good luck with it !!! And you're right - it IS the best travelling vehicle around...
on edit - do a search for v-10 mpg - I think I recall a thread just about this topic.... u might consider a programmer - they DO increase the mpg by increasing the effeciency of your motor...
I run 50 psi front and rear in my Excursion, and it seems to be a good compromise. Gas milage is 14 to 17 on the highway, tire wear is good, and ride is good. I have the Firestone OEM tires and Edelbrock IAS shocks. The shocks are much better than the factory shocks, and the reduced pressure in the tires allows for a good ride.
P.S. Tornados and other such devices are useless in my opinion, and thats my opinion!
