Well I got the axle repaired. It took about three weeks to find one. Anyhow when I fired it up I had forgotten about the exhaust leak at the L/S manifold. I've put on new gaskets twice and this is the third time it started leaking. It must be warped or something. Any how I've got a 74 F100 with a 77 351M in it. According to the #'s on the block it came out of another truck. Are the frames the same between 74 and 77 or close to the same? What do you guys recomend for a set of headers to use on this thing? Any preference shorty's over conventional? I've put headers on cars, but never messed with a truck. How hard are they to install, any clearance problems? Any help is needed and appreciated.
I put regular long tube headers on my truck. It is a 73 F100 with a 390. I have never tried it with the 351m/400 engine, but it shouldn't be too difficult. I took the motor mounts loose from the motor stands and jacked my engine up as far as it would go. I left everything else bolted up. Headers fell right in to place. I have power steering and power breaks. I didn't have any clearance problems. I bolted the headers on, sat the engine back down, and fired it up for the trip to the exhaust shop for pipes. I bought a set of headman headers. I've run them about a year now with no leaks or starter problems. I'm not sure about a 77 frame, but I know 73 to 75 is the same. I hope this helps.
I have a 78 F150 4X4 and have tryed 3 different types of headers on my 351 M. The ones I have now are great and were easy to install. They are Headman fenderwell and take very little modification to the fenderwells and leave you with a large varity of exaust system alternatives.
yes i would recommend fenderwell also, i had a 79 f150 4x4 and went with fenderwell, they were a piece of cake to put on and very easy to route the exhaust. inside the frame just looked to hard to run exhaust around the transfer case and stuff.
My truck is a 4X2 does that matter? What exactly are fender wheel headers? I am not familiar with them. Also I just had dual exhaust put on. I'd like to reuse it.
The fender well headers exit the engine compartment just behind the front wheel and the exaust runs down the area between the rocker panel and the frame, this makes it easier to run straighter exaust without worrying about crossmembers, shift and clutch linkage etc. You would be able to use some of your new duals, depending on configuration, it would need to be cut up some since the stuff under the body is much straighter.
Another thing with fenderwell headers is you get longer primary tubes which give you better torque. hope this helps. Tom
