Thanks for this thread, it is very helpful. The formatting of the USB stick was my issue too. The Sync website had instructions to format as exFAT for this update while the Sync 3 update for my other vehicle specified FAT32. I reformatted this USB to FAT32 as well and it worked as expected. All good now, plus I got my exercise going back and forth from my PC to vehicle, etc with many attempts to make it work.

This worked for me tonight. Finally at 4.6!

OP your solution is valid and correct.
And thanks for that.

I used a relatively old 8GB stick, formatted with FAT32, downloaded the files, extracted them to the root of the drive.
Oh and I did this on a Mac btw, so that works.
And this is for a 2012 Mustang, yeah I know this forum is for trucks but it's useful to know this works on other as well.
Few things worth mentioning.

1. Yes the files need to be on the root of the drive, not in a folder!
The system will be looking for the installer file in the root, it's not smart enough to dig into folders for it.

2. FAT32 formatted works.
I didn't try the others, I read somewhere that older vehicles need FAT32 so I went with that. I'm not a big enough nerd to really understand the differences between the file systems... Who cares.

3. No the installation does not work automatically when you plug the drive in. Go to PHONE. ADVANCED. ADD. INSTALL etc. It's in the PHONE section.

4. What makes it work, is like the OP mentioned, the system is looking for files as specified in the AUTOINSTALL.lst and INSTALL.lst files and the files you downloaded do not match what the system is looking for.
Meaning, those files tells the system where to find the .CAB files, which are the libraries that contain the updates.

As the OP mentioned you need to edit those files. What he doesn't say is specify what to change it from.
By default those files may have this:

SyncMyRide\E1BT-14D546-HC.CAB

You need to change it to this:
E1BT-14D546-HC.CAB

Meaning get rid of the "SyncMyRide" part in BOTH those files.
In Macos you will need to edit the files in something like Vi, Nano, Pico etc... since TextEdit is kinda useless for this sort of thing.
I don't have the time to teach you how to use one of those terminal editors.
But to point you in the right direction, from the terminal command line try
vi AUTOINSTALL.lst

Hit i for insert.

Make your edits.

Hit esc to exit inset mode, then :wq and win. Etc...
You'll get there.

5. Now for the .CAB files themselves.
By default mine all came like this:SyncMyRide\8L2T-14D546-AF.cab

Meaning the file names themselves had the SyncMyRide\\ in the filename.
For each file that has that, rename the file.
So the above file should now be:

8L2T-14D546-AF.cab
You can just use the MacOs of Win Explorer shell to rename the file, you don't need to do that in a terminal.

6. Finally after going into PHONE and manually starting the install, the install finished for me in less than 10 minutes. Took a drive, went to the carwash in case it was going to take longer but it seemed like it finished in under 10 mins.

Thanks again OP.

This is a reply for all the Mac users on here who need some help.

First I don't own a Ford truck, I have a 2014 Ford focus but the process is the same. For Mac users you will need to download a Notepad analog program. I used Textmate and it worked for me with no issues. Here is the link I used to download the program: https://macromates.com/

The files you will be editing are the autoinstall.lst and install.lst programs. When you open them in Textmate you will see that there are file strings that look like this: SyncMyRide\FJ5T-14D546-BA.pks (most will end with .cab). You must delete the SyncMyRide\ portion from the file string so that all the files then look like:
FJ5T-14D546-BA.pks Once you have deleted the SyncMyRide\ portion from the string then you can save the file.

Like it says in the original post you must have all files accessable outside of a file folder in the root menu. Do Not drop the folder filled with files directly onto the thumb drive and attempt an install as this will not work. Make sure all the files are on the thumb drive in the root menu with no folders on the drive.

Don't forget to format your drive! Mac calls the FAT32 format Microsoft FAT, or Micro FAT. This is the same as FAT32. If you select other FAT format options your drive may not work. Since my car is a 2014 I chose the old FAT32 designation as I believe that is the designation that Ford told me to use after scanning my VIN number. Based on the year, make, and model of your car I would check with Ford as to what version of FAT you need to format your drive to.

Lastly all of the files begin with the designation SyncMyRide\ You must delete this designation at the begining of each file so that the autoinstall and install files will be indexing the correct file. You don't need a special program to do this, just rename the file like you normally would and remove the SyncMyRide\ designation.

After that everything should work and sync should install.

Place the car in park, turn on the vehicle, insert the drive, find the install menu inside of the phone menu, press ok on install and listen for the prompts.

Ford says it takes about 30min to install. Mine was pretty fast at about 15min. Wait for it to tell you that the installation is complete the second time. The first prompt is just to let you know that it uploaded the files. The second prompt lets you know that everything installed correctly. My sync defaulted to my radio after 15min, then I had to press the media button to get back to the install screen before the system let me know the update was successful.

You guys are brilliant

jb123abc and Andrew L. - you guys are brilliant. I hadn't updated my 2011 Expedition Sync (without Nav) for at least the last six years because of problems with the updates. I decided to give it another shot with update 4.6 and of course it failed - several times. I found and followed your directions and the update worked. I have no idea how you guys managed to figure that out but it definitely did the trick. On another subject, I've been trying to update the maps in my 2020 F150 Nav since July and have not been able to get the Nav voice recognition to work. I've been working with Ford on it with no successful solution. I've reset and slicked the system and reloaded the maps a half dozen times without success. Each map load takes 70 minutes with the truck running so I do it while driving. Sync is the ultimate proof that Ford is not a software company.

Sync is made by Microsoft for Ford.

While Microsoft provided the Windows Embedded Automotive OS for Sync 1 and MyFord Touch, the applications running on that OS were developed by Ford and other third party developers. It looks like Ford thought they cut their losses with the Windows Embedded Automotive OS when they went with the Blackberry QNX system for Sync 3 in 2014. However, as a Sync 3 user in my 2020 F150, my experience is that things aren't any better than they were with the Microsoft OS. The apps are still lousy. And who uses a Blackberry anymore? For Sync 1 I think there's plenty of blame to be shared between the OS developer (Microsoft) and the applications developers (Ford & third party developers). In my opinion, Sync is still validation that Ford is not a software company because of their apps. Blaming the Microsoft OS doesn't excuse the poorly designed apps.

From Wikipedia: "The first two generations (Ford Sync and
MyFord Touch) run on the Windows Embedded Automotive operating system designed by Microsoft,[3] while the third generation (Sync 3) currently runs on the QNX operating system from BlackBerry Limited.

SYNC Gen1, Sept. 2007-Nov. 2012[edit]

SYNC v1, which debuted September 2007, offered the ability to play certain entertainment media, the ability to connect to certain mobile phones and digital audio players and to utilize SMS.[3] In January 2008, SYNC v2 was released, which enabled two new Ford developed applications: 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report.[3] SYNC v3, released in April 2009, enabled the Traffic, Directions and Information application. Later that month, Ford Work Solutions, a collection of five applications marketed towards professionals who buy Ford trucks, was added. The applications included in the Ford Work Solution were Crew Chief, Garmin Nav, LogMeIn and Tool Link.[3][3] SYNC v4 and v5 were released in January 2010 and January 2011, respectively, and enabled the Ford-developed MyFord Touch application for certain 2011 model year vehicles as well as SYNC AppLink capabilities for certain 2011 model year vehicles.[3] The latest version of SYNC was released in November 2012 by Ford and is only applicable to certain vehicles and configurations.

Ford has extended the warranty for Sync on several 2011 to 2014 models to five years as a customer satisfaction matter. (Field Service Action Number: 12M02)[20]

MyFord Touch[edit]

Main article: MyFord Touch

Sync 3[edit]

On December 11, 2014, Ford announced Sync 3, which will replace MyFord Touch, will have simpler features and will be powered by QNX software by BlackBerry Limited instead of Microsoft.[4] The Sync 3 name will be used for both Ford and Lincoln models, though Lincoln's will have a different theme. Over half of Ford's North American vehicles will have Sync 3 by the end of 2015 and will be expanded globally afterward; vehicles not equipped with Sync 3 will be equipped with the original Ford Sync.[4] Ford cited issues with Microsoft's complex software dragging down its scores with Consumer Reports and other consumer magazines being a reason it switched to the BlackBerry QNX operating system.[4]

Ford tells you to use the wrong file type

I finally got mine to work. The Ford website tells you to format the USB drive as exFAT rather than FAT32. I finally saw here people saying to use FAT32. My sync is updating now.

I needed this SYNC SW update since my Samsung Galaxy S5 running latest Android OS would no longer bluetooth pair with my Ford Sync - (which of course drove me f*in nuts!!).

I had to restructure and edit the download that I got from Ford and then copy it onto a USB key and then all works as it should. If you're not PC saavy then find someone who is and let them read this.. its really not that hard.

On your PC once you unzip the *.ZIP file (Sync SW update) you downloaded from Ford into a directory you need to MOVE all the contents out of the "SyncMyRide" directory up one level.

Then you need to delete the entire "SyncMyRide" directory completely!
In your PC directory, where you're doing all this work - it should look like the file I attached: Ford-sync-sw-1.JPG

Then you need to use Notepad to edit/save both autoinstall.lst and install.lst files exactly like I did in the next file I attached: Ford-sync-sw-2.JPG

Then you take all those files in one directory and copy them all onto any freshly formatted USB key that's 2GB or greater.

Now when you plug that USB key into Sync USB port the "Install Application" should work and update your SYNC SW version properly. (also btw "SYNC USB" properly identifies the USB key because it can find things)

I think the reason you saw "File Not Found" on "Install Application" is because Ford _may_ have botched their new "SYNC" update program (running on WindowMobile) causing it to become unable to properly traverse directories (like the original "SyncMyRide" subdirectory). If I remember right - when doing my last SYNC 4.4 SW update it all happened from the one, top-level(root) directory on USB key and it worked fine.

This update is really good to and fixes a lot of other annoyances prevalent in SYNC SW 4.4

Hope this helps others

What BD says on this is 100% correct. The Ford website is WRONG when it tells you to format as exFAT - format your USB as FAT32.

I just finished updating my 2012 F-150 Platinum after MUCH messing around (like most of you). I'll try to save you some time.

Format your USB as FAT32.
Download these files https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...Ip?usp=sharing

Put those files on your USB

Plug USB into vehicle

Phone > Settings > Advanced > Install

2015 Ford Fusion updated!

It finally worked on my 2015 Ford Fusion. I must’ve tried over 10 Times until I got to the bottom of this thread. I’m not 100% sure would work for me but it was one of two things or two things. First I changed the key I was using the child my key and not the adult my key. I also download the Google drive from above and when I put it in it said installation started. I was so excited but then it said insulation failed. Then I went and looked at the two files between my Ford fusion download from the UK version (I’m in the us) of Fords website. The files that were in the Google Drive above had a few more files so I deleted the extra files and I over wrote the cab files that were on the files from the Google drive with my Ford’s website files. It really could’ve just been because I was using the child’s my key but after I replaced the cab files AND updated the name structure in the others using textmate . It worked! My old version was FJ5T-14D544-AA and now I’m on GG1T-14D544-AB. If you want the 2015 fusion update files message me at 007uberdriver@ g mail

Hello all,
I have a 2010 f150 with Sync 1 (no nav) I updated from sync 4.2 to 4.6 about a year ago with absolutely no issues.

I now have a 2014 mustang with Sync 1 (no nav) and it appears ford no longer provides the updates on the syncmyride website. I called Ford and they said they dropped the North America support for Sync 1 and you need to go to a dealer to update.

I now have 4 versions i found online (Screenshot Below of these packages)

DR3T-14D544-AG - Found on a forum
DR3T-14D544-AF - Found on a forum
GG1T-14D544-AB - Found on a forum
DL3T-14D544-AG - Downloaded from Ford UK Website using my 2014 mustang VIN

I have tried loading these all to my car over 20 times already.

I have 2 usb sticks, both black tab USB 2.0. One is 16gb and one is 8gb.
I have doublechecked the naming in the files and deleted the "SyncMyRide" Folder and renamed lines in the "install" and "autoinstall" as directed above. Nothing seems to work. any suggestions?

I know it’s been a while but if you’re still having problems updating it might be because of your current sync system. Sync 1 only updates to #2, and #2 to #3. You wouldn’t be able to jump straight from 1 to 3 when updating because the updates install into the previous version.
Try updating to the second version first then to the third.
Also is there any chance that you still have any of the sync 3 files cause I’m trying to update my 2011 stang too
