unless you've replaced the tank recently, spend the $100 for a new tank. lots of older tanks have pin holes in the top from rust.
the only way I know to clean it is to take it to a radiator shop, keep rinsing it out with clean gas, or take it to a car wash and blast it out, then drain the water out, and rise with gas

That eastwood gas tank cleaning stuff is pretty good. I never used it but friends have with good luck. Those were collector cars with hard to come by tanks though, it might be chaper (if you count your time) and eaiser to buy a new tank.
