for about the last week, i've been having problems with the temperature reading on my '84 F-250 with a '92 7.3L diesel. until a week ago, the temperature when warm ALWAYS read between the O and the R, and my oil pressure has always been at 20 when idling and 40 when driving or cold idling
now, however, the temp reads up on on the A and the pressure is at 40 idling, much as it would be if it were cold idling but it doesnt step down like it should, it just stays there. i know that the temp isn't technically overheating as it is still in the normal range, but i shut it off before it gets out.
i've checked all the fluids and just recently changed the oil and the radiator hose/fluid so that shouldnt be the problem.
anyone have a similar problem? any suggestions on other things i can check? the only decent shop in the area can maybe look at it tomorrow, but can't fix anything, and i'll need to be able to drive it long distances early next week.
I agree with bremen242. I lossed the grounding strap that went from the block to the firewall on my '84 150 (351w) and that sent my oil and temp way up, almost above the "L". I knew it was electrical when I turned the lights on and both guages pegged!! I have also been told that there's a small voltage regulator in the dash for these two guages and that can go bad sometimes resulting in high readings. Also, I could never think of a mechanical problem in which temp AND oil pressure can skyrocket at the same time. Replacing the broken ground strap fixed my problem.

well, i've just taken it to a mechanic, and he removed the belt between the ac pump & the fan, because the pump is done anyways, needs replaced. it appears that the pump seizing was slowing down the fan which was causing some of it, because the temp doesnt read as high since he did that. the pressure looks good too at this point, but it was pretty warm, so we'll see how it looks after it gets cool again.
also, my water pump has something wrong with it, there's a lot of play in it front to back that shouldn't be there, so we're going to get that replaced and go from there.
