'92 F250, 7.3 IDI with an E4OD. Truck is all stock.
This morning i made a run to the junkyard, and when I was on my return trip, i began noticing a rough grinding/scraping noise while cruising or "floating the pedal" - If i am accelerating, or my foot is completely off the pedal, the noise does not present itself. It sounds like rocks in a blender. Truck still seems to be shifting and running great, trans fluid is a bright red and does not smell burnt. I am thinking it is the torque converter at this point. Also note that the truck seems to be making a scraping noise while at idle in park as well, bu that is a more subdued sound and it just seems like the engine is louder in general.
I've had rear end pinion bearings make some funky noise when coasting. It wasn't super loud but the bearings were toast (if I recall it was only the inner). Tightening the pinion nut cured the noise briefly until the rollers came apart. It was quiet under load or hard engine breaking (initially).
No bad experience with the E4OD here, just putting an idea out there.
I should add, I thought it was the transfer case based on feel/sound. Rebuilt that, noise persisted.

My main reasoning for not thinking its in the rear end is the presence of the noise at idle in park. The converter is moving while it's in park still, correct?

Did you replace the pump as well when you did your TC?

TC got sent back to Precision Industries and they confirmed the clutch lining was coming apart. TC was in the truck when I bought it,apparently old. I pulled the trans apart for a rebuild/look see and everything else was fine.

Hmm...
Well, I can say at 300K this is the best shifting E4OD ive ever been in, and I've driven plenty. I'd hate to fool around with the internals.
Now that i think about it, the sound reminds me of when you grind gears in a standard transmission.
Evening all,
had a chance to power brake the truck to help diagnose the issue as it stands - when I power brake the truck, the noise vanishes like a damn fart in the wind right above 1100RPM. I am now leaning towards a cracked flex plate.any input?
I was just about to suggest that you remove the inspection cover on the trans and take a look at the flexplate. When they crack, they are silent under load but make nasty noises when idle.Look up in there,if it's cracked, you'll see it.
Here you can see a cracked one I once had on my F-450 IDI truck."Horrendous grinding" yet silent under load, fit the description when this happened as well.
Vin code "M" flexplate.(Not for optional '93/'94 factory turbo engines - VIN C & K) For N/A (or turbo kit added latter) engines only:
I thought a rod was going to come out of the engine block.Had I not known the engine in this truck was a fresh reman,I would of swore the engine was spent.
I was trying to get the tach, speedo, and my foot on the pedal to kinda show the pattern im seeing as far as the noise in concerned. Please dont hate for the vertical orientation.
