I don't know if the 2017 model is different, but I have the factory extender on my 2014 that I'm trading in. I'm leaving it in the truck because I think it is junk. It gets in the way of the rear tie downs. The turn ***** to lock it together stripped about the third time I used them, all the guts are plastic. I'm just going to get one of the ratchet bars this time. I had the bed extender mainly to keep stuff from sliding to the front of the bed. Waste of money for me. But that's just my opinion.
I have the bed extender it did not come with the truck i got it later as an xmas present. I do use it on occasion both inside and outside the bed. I use it inside to keep groceries and luggage towards rear of the bed. I use it out side when i need more cargo space.
A few thoughts when folded in the bed it does block a good amount of the bed lights I would say u lose about 40% of the light. Also the bed light switch is harder to get to but you still can get to it. If you really need the light you can flip them out onto the open tailgat to get full light. I do that sometimes.
The bed extender is different than the previouss gen trucks. Its smaller. The last gen trucks had straight sections on the foldable bed extender which gave it more room. You could use almost the entire tailgate except for the very corners as extended cargo area. The new bed extender has curved corners which gives u significantly less usable carge space when using it. You lose a much larger chunk of the tailgate corners on the new version. Same goes for if you flip into the bed.
I still like having it because the front 2 feet of my bed is almost always full of tools and rolling bedcover storage can so being able to flip it out and get extra cargo room is useful to me. If i was spending that kinda money on it I would have made it one of the last accesories I purchase 365.00 is nearly the cost of 4 new fox 2.0 shocks.
I use mine mainly to keep stuff at the back, it works great for that and folds out of the way when not in use. I paid $320 for it, bought it from a Ford dealership selling on eBay.
Tell me more please. Does it attach directly to the hardware already in the truck or do you have to screw mounts into the truck? It was hard to tell from their website. Does anyone have it in a 2017 SD? Looks like a well made unit.

Ready Ramp has several install video's and pictures that show all the latching/attaching hardware -
I think this is a neat gadget to have, but it lists for $365 and not sure if i'll use it much.
Does anyone have it installed? Does it get much use?
Is it secure? (not easily removable/stealable)
A photo of the driver's side, installed:
I can still get to the LED bed light switch and the factory cleat tie-down locations. If you have the 5th wheel prep kit with the 7-pin trailer plug in the factory location, it WILL interfere with that. You install it with the big torx bolt you see in the middle, it pivots into the bed and out to the tailgate on that. To steal it somebody would need that socket and a wrench, so I see it as pretty secure.
I use it a lot to keep small stuff back by the tailgate on grocery / hardware store runs.
I can send you a picture of it closed, if you like.
I have it. I had it in the bed the first two years Then I took it out. Kind of useless for a long bed. It would be good so things don't to roll around the inside of the bed. I have a long bed so I never need a bed extender.
I don't think ford one is worth it. If I were to have one I would want one that is solid the is easy to remove. With it in the bed it wiggles and gets in the way.
Had the bed extender on my 08 and absolutely loved it. Yes, it's made of plastic and the stow away locking tabs will eventually break off, but it's functionality is great. An 8' box with a bed extender is a beautiful thing.
I did end up installing a 7 pin connector in the bed and that didn't work out so well with the extender wing in the way, but I managed.
however, I did not get the extender on my 17. I don't get it, they made it so when it's locked in place it cuts the the corners too much, doesn't really give you much more room.
i'll probably go aftermarket. Something that can be easily removed when not needed.
I agree that I liked the flatter one better, not sure why this one is curved. It reduces the space between the retracted parts a little, an inch or two, but where I could used to fit THREE coolers when RV towing I can now only fit TWO. I could get one slightly smaller cooler, too.
