well to change to and auto there are 3 choices. 1 is a C-6 but is only a 3speed so no Overdrive but strong. 2. AOD which has an overdrive and when built right can handle a lot of abuse. 3.E4OD which has overdrive and was available in your yr truck problem would be you must get a new computer because this tranny is electroncily controlled.
either one you will need to get a new steering column unless you plan and using a floor shifter. just not sure that can be done with the E4OD or not.
best thing to do would be to figure out which one you want and find a rig with that setup and start taking parts
for sure your best bet is to find a doner rig...those small brackets/ bots will nickle and dime you to death. plus with the e4od you may as well get her rebuilt before you put it in cause it wont be long
