I have a 82 f-150 4X4 351w 3 speed auto trans.
I need to know what I need to put a 4 speed auto in it.
What other years I can remove trans and flywheel from. No electric.
Bolt up and go. Thank you
The AOD is non-electric, and was found behind the 351w in some applications. Not sure about 4x4. It was a troublesome box in it's early days and Ford improved it over time. '88 to '93 from a truck or V8 are the preferred starting points.
What are you trying to accomplish? If you are going for gas mileage, do the math. You will have to drive that thing repair free for 10 years* to pay back the cost of an AOD and all the fixin's.
i always thought the AOD was electric to a point but I come from ZF and C6 world
No not electric. It has a valve inside the trans that sends fluid up through the hollow input shaft and that locks up the convertor. But that hollow shaft is also a weak point if you want to pound on it. It you drive normally it would probably hold up ok, I would run a cooler on it.
Thank you everybody for all of the info. But, all I need to know is what year of Ford 4X4 I need the AOD, flex plate and torque converter that will bolt up to my 1982 F-150 4X4 351w.
I don't know anything about AOD transmissions - but it sounds like some (maybe later models) may have had an "electrical component" to them - as there is an AOD transmission here that has "an electric O/D delete" AOD - Broader Performance
But I'm not sure what that is. It is described as an electric solenoid added to control OD on/off. Maybe it's just a mod that "Broader makes/adds" for performance reasons.
A call to Broader Performance can probably answer a bunch of your questions (even if you don't buy from them).
