FE 428 GoneMild build question
I'm finally getting around to building my truck and wanted to get some opinions on a thought i've had.
The motor is a 1964 FE 428 from a TBird. It will be transplanted onto a 1974 F100 4x4. I realize I can make it into a 600+HP beast but that doesn't help with DD drivability.
I'm wondering if it is advantageous to build out the block, port heads, port intake, high flow exhaust, EFI, but put in a milder cam to 'restrict' the motor output to maybe recover mpg & make it last longer.
Thoughts/opinions/concerns?
Thanks for the input!
Ben
I guess I like the idea of having the potential to go wild but the wisdom to be reserved. I figure if the motor is out and everything is getting replaced, why not build it up and have it capable of lots of torque but controlling that rage.
If you are doing a rebuild, 428 or not, you can skip porting the heads and intake. A decent dual plane aftermarket or Ford genuine iron back breaker 4bbl intake will work. RV cam, a 600 vacuum secondary carb & some Sanderson shorty headers will put you into a good low to mid range motor. You can go bigger on the carb, but a 600 will get you into the 5000 rpm range methinks.
Serving suggestion. Many many builds and discussions in the FE forum, including a recent discussion about going 445 rather than paying a premium for an "original" 428.
I apologize, it is out of a 66 TBird. I checked the numbers on the block and it is indeed a 428.
Lots of knowledge in this FE forum and on 54. Most of it boils down to what is the intended purpose for the motor. High HP build setup is useless for 4wd truck.
I think you can build it with 9ish compression, the mild RV cam and smallish carb--plenty of grunt, but it's going to drop off in power in the high 4s methinks......
Here is a chart showing specs, most notably the compression of 10.5 for your motor. A bit high these days for this engine:
