Roof Rack Removal-SOLUTION

Took the roof rack off all the way, of course you are left with 20 holes, plus the nut inserts stand a little proud, how to take care of them so it looks good/finished and doesn't leak?

I could have just stuck a bolt back in it and lathered sealer around it, not.

I found these red aluminum washers with 6x1mm bolts on Amazon, total cost $20. I did use clear silicone underneath and in the hole to be sure it didn't leak.

You can't see the roof, but I hate leaving things unfinished.

Take a look

Add a bunch of "LEDs" and have roof-top running lights.

The buttons look good but is it just the reflections in the photo or does it look like the back was crunched and repaired?

The area around the rear glass hinge appears to have been repaired. It light just be in the photo though.

No damage, nothing, super overcast, the paint is so shiny it reflects everything, check out the side reflections. I've been polishing it.

Looks clean! I'd put some sealant in the cracks at the seam sealer. I had a pinhole leak there that drove me crazy as I had water leaking down the right rear window and pillar when we had heavy rain. Took me a while to find it, but sealed and no trouble since.

The majority of Ex roofs have this look. The way they flowed that seam sealer in the grove combined with the stampings of the roof make it look...unfinished. At least mine is high enough that I never see the roof anymore.

I plan or just removing the cross pieces and leaving the long side rails. They may be useful later.

I've used those aluminum washers before and love them! Never thought I would ever see them on an Excursion!

I did the same. I did have a leak in the roof and ended up pulling all the screws one by one and applying sealant to the threads and putting them back in. No more leaky.

I was up there polishing, took off the rails anyway and figured it looked better without them.

Never going to use the rack for anything anyway. They looked a little tatty too.

Oldguyfl, I love the way yours looks. I have real ratty rails on mine. The question I have is after being there for nearly 19 years, what to expect when I remove them. I read in a post somewhere that there are gaskets under the rails. Is that correct?

Another alternative would be to spend a couple hundred having them blasted and powder coat. I guess it depends on what look I'm after.

Do you have a link or a part number for the washers and screws?

Oldguyfl stated the fasteners were 6x1mm but not the length. Does anyone know what length is needed?

I would like to have everything ready when I do the operation. Then decide if I want to have my rails powder coated.
