This is not true! Look on page 4 of section 40 in the illustration catalog and you will see a 4 pinion OPEN carrier. I never said traction-lok. The traction lok is also a 4 pinion carrier and is illustrated on page 10.
The 4 pinion carrier is rated at 3300 lbs, the 2 pinion is rated at 3060 lbs.

This pic shows 2 spider gears (basic part number 4215) and 2 differential (aka side) gears (basic part number 4236).
1964/72 9" rear axle parts list #91 lists:
(1) C9AZ-4215-A Spider Gear Kit that includes 2 gears and 2 washers.
(2) C8OZ-4215-A Differential (side) Gears.
1959/72 F100's with 9" that has a 9" ring gear has a 3,300 lbs. axle capacity.
1968/72 F100's with 9" that has a 9 3/8" ring gear has a 3,600 lbs. axle capacity.
The Traction-Lok pic on page 10 shows 4 spider gears and 2 differential (side) gears.
Parts list 91 even states "4 pinion". Look at the part numbers for the shafts. It lists 2 short shafts, one with part number C1AZ 4211-B, and the other with part number C6AZ 4211-B that includes a retaining pin. The long shaft is part number B7AZ 4211-A.
The illustration has both a 2 pinion and 4 pinion and is labeled as such.

Notice the +@$ symbols in front of the part numbers, these are defined at the bottom of the page.
B7AZ-4211-A = 1957/87 9" with 2 pinion.
C6AZ-4211-A = 1968/72 4 pinion. The reason for the 1966 number is, this rear axle was introduced in 1966 for some cars.
C1AZ-4211-A is also listed for 4 pinion, but only 1968/72 F100 9's w/a 9 3/8" ring gear had 4 pinion rear axles (4 spider gears/2 differential gears).
I agree that there appears to be an error in parts list 91. There has to be 3 shafts in a 4 pinion carrier; 2 short ones with one pinion each and one long one with a pinion at either end. In my actual real world experience the 2 short shafts are identical. I believe the error is in not indicating a quantity of 2 C1AZ short shafts as being required, however, it may be that the C6AZ short shaft is an acceptable substitute for one.
I will check my rear axle ID tag and if it indicates a 4 pinion carrier (the way I interpret the catalog) I will open it up and count them.
Also notice there are 2 separate pinion kits required, each containing 2 pinions.
