What problems will a intake leak cause?

For the most part my van seemed to be running fairly stable. It wold stubmel a little now and then on take off but not often. Fairly often you wold feel a slight surging at very very low speeds just putting along. Other then that was the lousy gas mileage and black tail pipe..

When i removed the upper intake today I found the gasket had been torn during instillation, perhaps from the factory. I know it was leaking between the front two ports and perhaps sucking in fresh air in one spot in the same area. I think who ever installed it must have bumped the gasket when installing it. I am going to make a couple of line up temporary studs so it has to be sat down straight along with holding the gasket in place.

Here is what I found. besides the intake was black and wet looking like oil.

Yea, you had a vacuum leak there. Really though with port injection, there's nothing damaging about it, other than it could suck in dust if you drove regularly in dusty conditions.

Yea, the engine's taking in a bit more air than the computer's adding fuel for.

Generally, an intake leak will cause a high idle.

When you re-install, try this stuff for attaching the gaskets, one can goes along ways - you will not have to deal with line-up-studs.

It's not a huge deal as long as the vacuum leak is within the limits of the PCM to compensate. The fuel/air mixture is adjusted in real time using feedback from the oxygen sensors, so the additional air would be adjusted for. There's a certain point where a check engine light would be set, but I think the older OBDI systems aren't as sensitive as more modern ones are.

If the van ran fine, I don't think there would have been any negative detriments beyond a small amount of unfiltered air being sucked through there.
