I'm aligning my engine and tranny. Since I have a 3 speed and a 4 speed mount I'm wondering if the engine and tranny are supposed to be dead center in the frame? I need to know so I can drill two holes in my homemade mount adaptor so when the engine and tranny are done it will just bolt right on.
It depends on whether the engine is going to be centered or not. Most installations are centered, but since I'm using a Chrysler K-member, I'm offsetting mine two inches toward the passenger side to have more room for the steering box and power steering pump. First, I got the engine where I wanted it (two inches left of center and straight in the frame front to rear with the transmission attached and sitting on the rear mount but not bolted to it). Then, lined up the holes for the tranny mount to drill them.
Ok Nathan, I just crawled down under my truck with a tape measure - sure enough the stock V8/tranny setup is dead center. Makes sense as the waterpump/motor mounts on the front of the block are symmetrical and the fan is square with the radiator.
Anything else I can measure for you while I'm down here?
