i have a 4 cyl 94 ford ranger,XLT. 2 yrs ago my starter died, and i replaced it with a refurbished one.Occasionaly over the past yr it would not start on the first turn.Soemtimes it would go on secodn turn.
Today however i went to go to work and my starter wouldnt turn.I did the jumper cable trick and it didnt turn.I cant imagine me losign another starter only after 2 yrs and 40k miles.
Anyone have any thoughts or similar problems and results they have encountered in the past which could help me before i go to a mechanic?
Rebuit srarters are number one on my list as having the greatest chance of being defective. I would check your cables out before you swap the starter. Check the voltage at the starter while trying to crank it.
well i opted to try banging it to see if it would at least start, it started, of course i turned it off and started it agai about 30 secoinds later and it started fine.
Sounds like a 'dead spot" on the armature. It happens with rebuilts from time-to-time. Some parts houses will exchange them if they go bad like yours did.
You can also place a volt-meter across your battery terminals and check voltage drop when engaging the starter. Normal voltage would be 12.6 - 12.8 and should drop no further than 10.5 when the starter is engaged. If the voltage does not drop at all when engaging the starter it may be the solenoid.
Good Luck
