Fellow user here's the update the Truck I asked for information for is a F-350 custom w/flatbed, it has a 7.3 international diesel with 169,569 miles on it, it is a 5 speed and the clutch is totally shot. We got the guy to go down to 3000 dollars for it from 3600. I found some perfomance parts for the truck from banks power.com and I can put a turbo and performance exhaust on it. I still need to know though how much horse power and torque comes standard with this truck, and if there are any major problems with this year model. Oh and one more thing give ur comments on the vehicle price and if u think it will be a good deal , it will be a daily driver/ work truck.
3000 seems like a decent deal. You would have to give some more info or a pic to tell if it is worth more/less but 169K is not outrageous and still has a few good years left. The stock engine about 160HP/360FtLb of torque, I said about, don't hold me to that. Scotty
The truck is a totally different animal. Banks says they get about 500FtLbs of torque after the turbo is installed. I am not sure how much more you gain, as I have never dyno-ed the truck but the seat of the pants feel is unreal compared to the stock setup, hills are the biggest feeling, you just set your cruise and watch your boost gauge climb and the truck whirls up over the hill without ever losing speed. I wouldn't even want a diesel without a turbo, I am sure I will catch a little flack for that comment but for my purposes, the stock engine wouldn't make enough power for me. Hope this help. Scotty
I agree with everything above. I've only owned my diesel a few weeks, but DAYUM...what hills? I thought I saw a hill...but I never felt it.
I have the Banks Sidewinder on my 6.9 The boost gauge climbs, as do the EGT's, but the truck never loses speed.
My gasoline engine could NEVER match the performance of this set-up. And my buddy has an 89 F-350 with a non-turbo diesel in it. It will pull any load you hook up to, but I've seen it lose speed on the long pulls. It's not awful, by any stretch...but you just can't compare it to a turbo IMO.
Scotty,
I have heard that the 7.3 is gutless but at the moment i have a fairly stock 302 Cleveland in my 76 F250. I am dead set on changing it to a 7.3 at the end of this year ($$$coming my way). I have worked with heavy machinery, semis, B-doubles and roadtrains for ages and I am sure that a diesel (especialy with the banks turbo) will give me better fuel milage. Honestly what is the banks turbocharded pre computerised 7.3 like on acceleration compared to a 302? It should maintain speed up and down hills better than the 302 right? And also is the banks set up a twin or single turbo?
I would say it would probably be a little slower than a 302, don't hold me to it but, as soon as I had the turbo in I drove it on the stock tires and wheels and the truck really moved out, I loved the way it accelerated. The truck was just screaming, once I went to 37's it slowed down quite a bit but I don't think you will be dissapointed at all. I love the way the truck runs now and will be even happier with an overdrive unit and some gears to get some torque back. Scotty
Also I get around 12-15 MPG's with a mix of highway and city driving. There are not many gas trucks that can keep, plus diesel is 1.50 a gallon compared to 1.75 here in California so I am making out pretty decent.
