Body Roll

1998 Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4 4 x 4 165,000 miles. New shocks, tie rod ends and alignment. Tires are not new but acceptable. I recently purchased this and have never driven an Expedition before. I am completely happy with it but not comfortable with the control as it has a lot of body roll and you definitely need to pay complete attention while driving as it takes constant adjustment to the steering wheel. The sway bar bushings and links have not been replaced by me and as they appear to be good.

Is this just the way the Expedition is or should I replace all the rubber parts with poly and would that really help?

Sorry - LLS Load Leveling Suspension, aka air suspension.
Switch to turn on/off up under passenger side foot well.

sorry been away daughter got married.

I do not have air suspension, it just feels like when you correct the steering the body leans too much in the direction of the turn - maybe this is just how it is?

When you say "The sway bar bushings ..." do you mean the front and rear bar?
Don't know about the '98s, but does it have a rear anti-roll bar?
Our 2002 Excur did not come with a rear bar and it made a huge improvement in body roll when I put one on.

yes, it has both rear and front sway bars, all the rubber appears to be good.
It seems as the steering wheel is moved or corrected while driving - the front will lean the opposite way the steering wheel is turned. Not a secure feeling when driving.

What size diameter are the bars?
Does the 4wd Expedition sit a lot higher than the 2wd.
Any height increase (or increase in center of gravity) will make a vehicle roll more in turns.

I didn't measure the rear sway bar but it looks like 1". Front is the stock sway bar.
The Expedition is at stock height for a 4 x 4.

Maybe I will try new poly rubber parts

Polyurethane bushings will help, but not as much as a larger bar.
Our 2003 came with a 1.33" front and a .5" rear.
I upgraded to a 1.5" front and a 1" rear and is was quite noticeable.
I've seen a 1.25" rear bar for your '98, but no front bars for the 4wd.

I had a 1996 Explorer 4 x 4 and have driven my son's Yukon 4 x 4 SUV many times and neither have the body roll the Expedition does.
I will let you all know if new poly rubber on both front and back sway bars and bushings help
thanks to all

It is much better now- I had the alignment checked by the same chain outfit that did it a couple of weeks ago but at a different location. I had it checked because it pulled a little to the left, and the steering and the body roll is now much improved.

The toe setting was pretty far off they said. The sheet that showed the 'before' measurements on the toe was 0.04 on the right and -0.02 on the left. Now the readings are both 0.16 and 0.16.
The caster is off a little 3.8 on the left and 5.4 on the right. Apparently this is non adjustable. Moog is suppose the make an adjustable upper ball joint that could correct this is what they told me.

So I am thinking the whole issue was a bad alignment. Will not get alignment done at this place again even though the second one didn't cost but just the aggravation of it all.

Thanks for the input from everyone and hopefully this will help someone else.

I would still look into the larger sway bars. They make a huge difference.
