So last weekend I bought a 77 f150 4x4 4 speed SWB. I knew it was a smoker and wasn't running. Well over its years of sitting it has seized up. The question at hand is.....I have quite a few Small block ford parts laying around including a 90ish 302 out of a Mustang, a 4 bbl carbed intake and misc distributors including a duraspark. My thoughts are, I have seen older trucks with 302s and 4 speed combo, what is involved with the conversion on a np435, just a bell housing swap? I am trying to not spend 3k on rebuilding the 351 with new accessories. The truck is also manual steering, so it only needs a water pump and alternator.
I am just looking to do a cool cruiser and not a full blown restoration.
Yeah, definitely a bellhousing if the 351 is an M, and uses the 460 bolt pattern.
If it's a '90s 302/5.0, you'll need to be sure to get a 50 ounce imbalance flywheel. I think '81 was the first year for this spec on the 302. Earlier engines use a 28 ounce imbalance. You'll know if you put the wrong one on, because it will vibrate. The 351M is I believe 0 externally balanced. LOL, you could also have the 351M crank machined, and put it in the 302, and not have to replace your flywheel!
Exhaust might not line up, but might be a non-issue...
Good info @meangreen92. I think I can scrounge up quite a few parts for this and not be out of pocket much. I could always go the EFI way too and use all the Fox Body parts I got laying around.
