squeeking noise in 4x4
I used the truck in 4x4 on the road today, had a big snow storm, roads were snow covered. I noticed a squeeking noise when the truck starts to move up until it gets to around 45 mph. faster than that the truck begins to vibrate. The noise only happens when i am accelerating. It stops when I let off the gas or disengage 4x4. Anyone know what I'm talking about? This happened a long time ago but it went away so I paid no attention to it. Sounds like the transfer case but I don't know much about that.

The squeeking noise is most likely a bad u-joint. There are two u-joints between the transfer case and diff, two on the left side axle, and one on the right. A visual inspection will probably find the culprit. The transfer case to diff driveshaft is a piece of cake to remove and inspect for play so you might as well remove it and check for any binding.

Actually i'll have a look at the front drive shaft u-joints. They've been neglected, probably still original!! I just replaced the front axle u-joints this summer. The back ones were allright. There wasn't much ice either when I looked up there after I got to my destination. I'll have to get her in a dry spot so I can give her a good once over under there. I "HOPE" it's only the front drive shaft if anything. Would it hurt to drive the truck with the front drive shaft off for a little while? As long as the 4x4 was not engaged?
