Hi, I am new to this group so let me first introduce myself. My name is Steve and I live in the UK. I build replica Knight rider cars as a hobby (see my home page for details) and love all American cars and trucks. My full time job is a Director of my family business which is a HGV recruitment agency.
Now down to my problem.
I have a 1986 Aerostar which was leaking gearbox fluid fron the front seal. We have replaced the seal and this has stopped the leak. Prior to the removal and reinstall the box was working fine just leaking. Now the box will not change up the gears until you are going very fast in each gear (high revs) and I cannot find out why. In Over Drive or Drive it will not change from 1st to 2nd until you hit 35mph and from 2nd to 3rd until you hit 55mph. Like I say pre removal to fit the new seal the box was fine. Do any of you have any idea what I could try to sort this out?
Thanks in advance
Steve

Sounds like the vacuum line to the modulator is disconnected. It should be hooked up to a manifold vacuum source. With it disconnected the trans will shift like you are driving a wide open throttle all the time. Being an 86 you may want to check all the vacuum lines to make sure that they are in good shape.
Thanks Jimmy I will check them all. I remember putting the vac pipe back onto the steel pipe from the box when re fitting the box but I wonder if the pipe is leaking or if it has broken down with age... emmm something to check for sure. Thanks. If this is all ok is there anything else I could check or that I may have done wrong when re fitting the box?
Thanks for the help
Steve
If the lines are OK then the modulator itself could be bad. Check to see if there's trans fluid at the vacuum line connection, if there is the modulator's diaphram is gone at the modulator will have to be replaced.
Other things to consider (but probably not as likely as the vacuum modulator to be the cause) are improper fluid level and adjustment of the kickdown lever.
