Here is the sound of my 302. The truck is a 1978, but the engine a 1985 block. It has seen better days. Lots of oil coming from the passenger rear side of the area of the head.
The leaking could be the valve cover gasket, or even the oil pressure sender. But you're right-that don't sound good! Pull the valve cover and have a looksie...

If your flex plate (fly wheel) is cracked, it can make some pretty ugly noises which might make you think your engine is about to come apart...
Intake gasket set could be leaking along the china rail. Check valve covers for any loose bolts or throw on new gaskets - but maybe not till you confirm the source of the noise. Mechanical fuel pump is another possible leak location.

Going to try and dig into it a little bit this weekend. I did loose power when it happened and it stalled on me at each stop sign. So I suspect there is more to it. Fuel pump is new with new seal, and no leaking there. New timing cover and seal. No leaks there. Maybe small leak at the valve covers, and I had tightened the bolts on them a few days before all this happens. I will double check it though.
