Rear fuel pump troubleshooting

Hi. I have a 1996 f350 one ton dump truck that is my preservation project. It was a former town truck that was not well cared for. Anyway....i only use the front fuel tank because when i switch to the rear the fuel gauge pegs and the truck dies. Because its a dump truck, i can have easy access to the tank and the wiring connections. My amatuer instinct is to just get a new pump and install it, but im just trying not to throw money at the wrong trouble.

Any suggestions would be apprieciated

Chris

There are others more knowledgeable than I on how the fuel delivery module(FDM) and the check valves work. However, it does sound like yours may be bad in the rear tank. With the truck off and the rear tank selected, stick your head out the window and listen for the pump to run when you turn the key to the on position. It should run for 4-7 seconds.

Fuel gauge pegging means the is an open circuit at least in the gauge circuit. Check the wring back at that tank. It could be the dash switch. My bet is bad connection at the rear tank. That connector can become corroded.
