Rear drum brake hold down pin keeps calling out

The rear drums on my D60 have been having constant issues with my hold down pins falling out of the backing plate and allowing my drums to go all wonky. I've had it happen several times and even with everything hooked up correct it still manages to eventually pop out. What should I be looking for when I take this apart? Everything is brand new on the drums so I don't understand why the pin keeps falling out. All help appreciated

Do you have the straight (nail like) pins or the coiled spring type? If it's the straight type, are the holes enlarged and letting the pin heads pull through?

it's the straight pin, and it's falling out into the road, not inside the drum. Obviously this will only really happen if it loses tension on the pin however I am 100% sure I had every part inside the drum correctly placed in it, which is why I'm confused. I have to pull the drum for the 3rd time for this reason now

As Bill pointed out, is your truck the camper special, that has the heavy duty 12" X 2 1/2" brake shoes or does it take the 12" X 2" rear brake shoes?

Then as per Bill's post#3, you should be using the spring type. Sorry I can't look it up right now. I'm moving and my books are all packed into boxes. Maybe Bill or JEFFFAFA could post a parts breakdown.

12" x 2 1/2" brakes = 1966/72 F250 Camper Special & F250 2WD's with 7,500 lbs. GVWR

The 'nails' were used with 12 1/8" x 2" brakes: 1953/65 F250; 1966/72: F250 (except Camper Special's) and under 7,500 lbs. GVWR

I´m awfully confused now, mine is a 6,900 GVWR 2wd F250, but came with the 12x2.5 drums on the front and rear and was previously installed with 12x2.5 drums and shoes, but uses the ¨nails¨ Only time I´ve had an issue with the pin falling out has been on the rear

To clarify by ¨nails¨ I am speaking about the ¨J¨ shaped hold down pin

Both the 12 1/8" x 2" and 12" x 2 1/2" brakes have pins, but the pins used with 12 1/8" x 2" brakes resemble a nail (8L-2069-A).

The pins used with 12" x 2 1/2" brakes are curved, sort of J shaped (C7TZ-2069-A).

Why your 6,900 lbs. GVWR F250 has 12" x 2 1/2' brakes is a mystery.

Parts catalog states that 1966/72 F250 Camper Specials (all 2WD thru 1976) and F250 2WD's with a 7,500 lbs. GVWR are the only F250's with 12" x 2 1/2" brakes.

So my question is: Is your F250 a Camper Special?

I understand now, lack of sleep lately. Just got done with my rear brakes last night, installing new hold down pins and I believe I found my problem, when trying to install a new pin I noticed that I had managed to pull it straighter when pulling the drum on. Not positive if that has been my issue but I would not be surprised if it was

^ 12 1/8" x 2" brakes.

12" x 2 1/2" brakes use different hold down springs and pins, do not use the pin retainers nor the horseshoe shaped parking brake operating lever retainers that a gazillion different FoMoCo vehicles have used since 1939.

The rubber brake adjusting hole covers are also different.

But yes, the springs were hooked up correct in the end
