My truck is stuck at the bank and won't start. i banged the starter with a hammer while someone else turned the key and nothing. the starter is two months old. The flywheel has some teeth missing and i think its stuck on that spot. i am going to get some buddies and pop the clutch later. But i have a bellhousing, clutch and flywheel from a mid 80's truck from a 302. I think all that is interchangble with my 300. Is it? Can i just use the flywheel with my current bell housing and clutch. I also would like to do this job myself. How easy is it. I don't think i will have problems pulling the trans. But i am not sure about doing the flywheel, does the clutch need to come out. Thanks

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Nov-01 AT 12:25 PM (EST)]I don't think the flywheels will inter-change. The 300 is nuetral balanced and the 302 is im-balanced (28 or 50oz, I don't remember which).
A new flywheel should only run about $110.
And yes, the clutch needs to come out to pull the flywheel. When you have it all apart, it is good insurance to replace the clutch anyway. Also the pilot bearing while you're in there.

Check this out. It is not exactly what you need, but gives a good price estimate.

The starter is running, we tried to pop the clutch, didn't start(not monving fast enough), then i turned the key, and it started right up. Just my luck when i shut the truck off, that it stops where there are no teeth on the flywheel. i guess i am going to get a new flywheel, the clutch was replaced a year ago and i think the bearing too, cause i blew the clutch pretty bad. i'll see if i am going to change them or not.

You might also want to check some machine shops. See if they can press a new ring gear on for you. Might be cheaper then replacing the entire flywheel.
You know what else works good in that situation? Take a socket on the front of the crankshaft and rotate the engine by hand to a point where the starter will engage the flywheel...works great for automatics where popping the clutch isn't an option.
