1994 PSD Intermittent rough running

Hello Folks,
I am new to both this forum and my truck. I have a 1994 F250 with a 7.3 lt turbo diesel and 160,000Kilometers on it. The truck has been running rough....no codes. Has been to the ford"specialist" and he thought it was the fuel filter. It was contaminated with small black particles that he was assuming was O-ring material.
The truck will buck and shudder under partial load conditions. When climbing a hill it runs fine but once the load on the engine is removed it starts to run rough...tough to explain. My buddy compared it to a gasser that was suffering detonation problems. I fear it is my fuel pump. Any ideas?

Fred

What do you have in it for oil, and what is the condition of the oil. Our PowerStrokes are peculiar in that they use oil pressure to build injection pressure in the injectors. If your oil lacks the proper anti-foaming additives, you will end up trying to build pressure with oil bubbles, and it doesn't work too well.

There are a whole lot of other things that could be causing your problem, most of which I wouldn't have a clue about, but since it is not throwing a code, this is one that I would look at. If you are unsure about the oil, you can take a sample and have it analyzed for a lot less money than having it changed. I'd reccomend Blackstone Laboratory.

Good luck and hope for the best.

Hi Carfunkel,
The last oil change was done at the Ford dealer...and that will be the last time at $130.00. It is time for the oil to be changed so could you recommend a good oil for the beast!

Thanks for the reply,

Fred

Delo 400, Shell Rotella and Mobil Super 1300 are good oils. They meet the API rating for the PSD. I use 15W40 all year.

I use Amsoil full synthetic 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel oil. I also have their remote bypass filter setup which filters down to the 1 micron range. This, along with regular oil analysis allows me to use extended drain intervals. The filters still get changed on a regular (5,000 miles for the standard filter, 10,000 for the bypass) basis, but the oil stays in until such time as the lab tells me that it is no longer doing a superior job. The couple of quarts that are added with each filter change are sufficient to keep the additive package in a safe working range.

I went to this system after about 5,000 hard working miles, during which I had three oil changes (500, 1000 and 2000 miles) with regular petroleum based oils. My first fillup of the Amsoil was changed after 17,000 miles due to high silicon content (dirt). At that time I removed the performance air filter I had installed and went back to the factory paper. The fresh batch of Amsoil added at that time is still going strong with almost 20,000 miles on it. I have read articles of some of the big rigs going hundreds of thousands of miles using this same extended drain interval and bypass filtration system. I never got nicked $130 for a change, but I figure the $200 more or less that I paid for this system has been paid for already.

Good luck and safe miles.
