Make sure trailer tires/brakes/bearings are good to go and go for it. Keep an eye on your trans temp. Your truck will have no problem pulling that camper. The route is mostly flat land. I have pulled more weight multiple times with my 2002 v10 without issue.
I ended up telling my buddy I couldn't help him. I had issues with my turbo pulling my 5000 lb 5th wheel on a 400 mile round trip, I'd imagine I'd have had big issues pulling 12.5k 800 miles.
That's a small trailer! And your truck had issues pulling it? Probably a good idea not to tackle your friend's trailer then. If I could get away from work, I'd offer to move it for him. Sounds like a nice road trip.
I was having issues with my turbo, I've got a new one coming now so all should be good. That's part of why I was tempted to pull it for him, it would have been a decent trip but I ended up having to around home for family troubles so it all worked out.
Same 10,000 lbs. max. towing weight my truck's Owner's Manual states too.
The bumper hitch for early models is limited to 10k because of the bolts used to attach the hitch to the frame.
In '02? Ford used larger bolts to get to a higher hitch rating. But the OP is using 5th wheel - so the hitch mount doesn't apply.
sure...for a new truck....it's not going to do that 15yrs and 200k miles later unless it's been rebuilt ( tranny, engine, turbos, cooling system, fuel delivery, suspension, etc.)

Well, I always thought the '99-03's were pretty similar in specs but I could be wrong about this. For my 2001, here's what FoMoCo states on my bumper and in the Owner's Manual under towing capacity. I can't speak for the 2002 models.
5th Wheel = GCWR of 20,000 lbs. minus the GVW (my '01 diesel weighs about 7,500 lbs. with full fuel etc.) = ~ 12,500 lbs. max. capacity left for 5th wheel towing.
So it does appear as if those with 5th wheel setups get a little more maximum towing capacity rating. The original OP should be able to find the same type of towing capacity specs in their Owner's Manual as well.
