No chains.....really?

I went over to my buddy's place after work last night to check out his '17 F250 CCSB 6.7 4x4 which he took delivery of yesterday.

After going over the entire truck we got to talking and he said the dealer had him sign a document agreeing to not run chains on the truck, only cables.

Now I have been out of the new truck market for over 15 yrs now but this one I have not heard of before.

Surely there must be a better explanation for this than the obvious ones I can come up with, damage from chains vs cables, or possibly a simple legal exclusion of fault?

What size tires/wheels is he running? I bought chains for my truck (20" wheels) because there are locations I go where not using them, even with the best studded tires known to man, is simply unacceptable and terribly dangerous. According to the owners manual....

I really have no idea why Ford doesn't want us using chains on the new super duty and why they only recommend cables, but I have heavy duty chains for mine and used them once this last winter without any negative affects.

I never signed a document like this. I have my bag of chains in my truck now. Maybe this is for 20" wheels?

The OM reference above indicates that this is 20" wheel issue.

The owners manual states it's for 20" rims and the reason is to not chip the aluminum wheels. In other words the dealers (maybe ford) are not going to warranty wheel damage caused by chains.

Might be regional, it's not like you get forced to use chains a lot in Texas, right?

Do they sell chains in Texas?

I'd guess it's a regional CYA paper that dealers who have had issues with customers generated to make sure to absolve themselves of any issues.

Yes we get snow in PA but it's very rare anyone uses chains. Getting occasional snow isn't normally a call to break out the iron slippers!

I don't recall signing anything related to snow chains when I bought my F-350 here in Colorado.

Since I already have cable chains from a prior vehicle that's what I'll use should the need arise.

I live in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern CA and our snow load here varies greatly from year to year. Nothing like you boys in AK, CO, etc. but at times we get hit pretty hard also.

Even during our heavy snow years about the only time I have chained up my truck is when I (need to) have the 5th wheel chained. I am having a hard time imagining myself towing heavy with the 5th wheel chained and cables on the truck.

Glad I ordered 18's. Thanks for the clarification Johnpsz & AK.

My '17 arrives this week. I thought I was too old and mature to get excited about something as simple as a new vehicle.

Wrong.
