Ive got a 79 351m and I recently had a 40 series original flowmaster put on. Its not really as loud as I was hoping it would be, but I am figuring that is because I kept the stock cat and 2 1/4" pipe. So my question is should I just dump the exhaust or should I run it out the side in front of the back tire with a 3" pipe coming out a 45 degree angle. I want it to be nice and loud, which I know dumping it would do, but people have warned me that dumping it can be bad. So is the exhaust heat a problem and would a heat shield fix that, or should I play it safe and run it out the side? And would the side be noticeably louder with the bigger pipe and all? I know that having the original piping on there is bad cause theres a whole lot of pipe from the muffler to the back, it goes way up to allow room for the axle, then down then bends out at a 90 degree angle. Also, I have to keep the cat cause it still needs to pass emissions.
So what do you think? thanks for any suggestions and opinions
Dumping it with turn downs will make it louder, but i think if you have it out the side it might be a tad louder than that since its still shooting the exhaust out to the side. I think it would look pretty cool too. Im in the process of doing this with my 91.
I would suggest getting a high flow cat to replace the 2 stock cats. I've heard that it should still pass emissions with the one high flow. Dynomax sells a high flow cat with dual 2" inlets/single2.5" outlet for around $90(go to Dynomax.com). Alot of people have suggested dumping it with turndowns under the bed makes it alot louder. The theory behind it is that the soundwaves bounce off the road and back up to the bed which acoustically amplifies it. I am planning to use this setup in a couple of weeks when my overtime check gets in. I will let you know how it goes.
When I first put the headers and turbos on mine (2 1/4")I didn't have the pipe to finish so left it dumped, was too loud for me (course I do leave the house at an ungodly hour) Went out the side, was a noticable improvement but still have that "tuff" enough sound. Am adding 3" x 24 tips tomorrow, hope to reduce the pop and deepen it a lil bit.
