Auto locking differential when in 4x4 mode

Auto locking differential when in 4x4 mode
I just bought a 97 f150 lariat took it off road and noticed that the rear end is in full posi lock mode. I have read about e-lockers but there is no switch to turn this function off. is this normal? I can handle a little extra tire wear but it seems that this would be hard on the trucks drive-train..
