Hey all - got a bit of an issue here.
Recently had the ball joints (upper and lower) replaced on the F250. Took it back in the next day as there appeared to be leaking from where they pulled the axle out to replace the inner seal. Appeared at the time to simply be excess residue in the "tube" (don't know the technical name for the tube that the axle is "in"). That was on Tues/Wed. last week. I don't think it has anything to do with my problem, but I also installed Bilstein shocks on Sat.
Today, I've noticed that there still appears to be leakage (enough for there to be spray back behind the wheel). Also, when turning hard to the left (as if in a U-turn), theres a periodic, heavy clunking coming from up front somewhere (cannot pinpoint it).
Service Manager told me it was "bumper stops" to prevent "overturning". Perhaps a load of sh**? I'm not sure. Performed a search for "clunking" (only a few million hits there) and "steering" on FTE boards, but haven't found anything quite related.
Any input is especially appreciated. My baby is wounded, and needs medical attention STAT!
Is the clunk steady as you turn, or intermittent? If it's steady it sounds like your hubs could be locked in if your truck is a 4WD. I don't think that would cause the leaking though, since a lot of guys on here will lock their hubs in the winter time and unlock them in the spring.
Well, at this moment, my 250 is in the shop. Turns out that when they did the ball joints (which requires removing the axle from the transfer case), the nicked one of the seals in the case putting the axle back in. So, that explains my leak. As for the clunking, it is intermittent (no pattern, and not always there), but it;s a strong enough clunk to be able to somewhat feel it in the steering wheel. Also, loud enough that anyone in the truck can easily here it. Good idea on the sway bars - I'll give it a check when I get it back.
As for one of the explainations from one of the techs, are there "bumper stops" to prevent some sort of overturning in the wheels? Just curious....
The clunk could be a shock that is locking up. Happened in a 2000 F-350 4x4. We searched and searched, and then took the shocks off and one of them was so hard we couldn't get it to move in or out.
