I have a 2004 Eddie Bauer Expedition and a 2005 F350. Both need radio upgrades. I was looking around, and the Pioneer AVH-290BT looks to be a good option, but wanted to hear other opinions. BT for the convenience of hooking up the phone, but touch screen is neat too. Anybody got an opinion?
You'll lose the rear seat controls, not a big loss for me as I found them to be more annoying than anything else. But all else works, steering wheel controls, subwoofer (if you have). Don't have the factory DVD so don't know about that.
Are you interested in a full NAV system ? It's the same work to do a stereo as it is to do a NAV system. The GPS antenna just fits up under the dash behind the head unit. Since the dash cover is plastic it has no affect on GPS reception. I used a Pioneer 940BT but there are dozens to choose from.
That one has a low resolution screen, looks very outdated. The one I linked to cost a little more, but it has decent hardware and an ok screen with higher resolution. Also more internal memory and such. From my experience with this one, a weaker head unit would be frustrating and annoying to use. It will also be upgraded to Android 6 any day now, which shows that the manufacturer actually supports their product. If you're looking into touchscreen and a "smart" head unit, this is one of the better ones at the moment. Its also one of the few which wakes up instantly when you turn on the ignition, so you dont have to wait for it to boot, as it supports hibernation when you switch it off.
If you're looking for a more traditional head unit, but with larger screen for reverse camera (which I highly recommend, very useful!), then Pioneer or other name brands may have something which fits better.
Would you like to get rid of your old radio? I would be interested if its is a stock radio in good working condition and all the lights work and if it will fit my stock location 1998 Expedition Eddie Bauer
It looks OK, but personally I don't like the low resolution on the screen, which this one has. According to the product page, it has a low resolution of 800x400 pixels, while current head units normally have 1024x600. It gives a sharper and nicer view when you have higher resolution. If this would bother you is more of a personal preference and what you use it for.
