Lately, I have noticed a little stiffness in my steering. Mainly when I turn left - it just feels like the truck doesn't want to come back to center like it should...almost like a tire is low on air (they're not - I checked) or a tire has laid over.
I have checked power steering fluid and looked at all bushings underneath.
Any chance that the steering stabilizer could be causing this issue?
Any other ideas?
Also...do these trucks not have any grease fittings in the front end? I have looked twice and still haven't found any (in my defense, I haven't had the truck very long)...
After I had a tie rod replaced, the wheels wouldn't return to center on their own. Had to manually straighten the steering wheel. Concerned me so much that I had it towed back to the shop. They explsined what it was just tight; loosened back up after driving for awhile (2006 F350 CC 5.4l).
Zerks - should be 3 oem zerks - two on the passenger front wheel knuckle/joint and one on drivers side knuckle. Most likely covered with gunk and hard to find, but they're there.
Check for frozen u-joints in the front axles. Even if the hubs/transfer case is not engaged, the u-joints still have to rotate internally as you steer, so if they're frozen up they'll give you exactly those symptoms.
^^^^^^^X2 what Jim said. You need to pull the shafts out and articulate the U-joints to feel the bind. A u-joint can look ok visually and not be...Our money is on a frozen joint cup or 3. Have new Spicer joints handy. A 4wd system should be engaged monthly on a soft surface to help avoid this. Also, grease the joints at each oil service or 5-10K miles.
