60 Gallon Fuel Tank
#46
Installed the S&B 60 gallon tank 6 weeks ago. Used Forscan to make the DTE change. At first a full tank showed 765 mile DTE. The next fill up it showed about the same. After a few more weeks and fill ups it gradually rose to 913 mile DTE. Is this normal? It seems like the DTE is "learning". Refilled last week at 1/4 tank and it did take about 45 gallons so it seems to be accurate at the fuel gauge. Anyone else experience this? About when will it stabilize for good?
BTW, the tank is awesome. I loved bragging to my friend who travels and camps with us about how i didn't have to refuel on our recent 750 mile round trip!

Here’s my DTE display after filling up my stock 34 gallon diesel tank after 500 miles of highway driving. 740 miles DTE. With a 60 gallon tank it would have been over 1,300 miles DTE.

I had the 50 gallon Titan tank installed in the bed of my F450 before hooking up the 5th wheel and heading from Texas to Michigan several weeks ago. I love the fact that I now have about 100 gallons of fuel on board. It really makes for less stressful travel days since I can now tow usually 2 and sometimes 3 days before refilling. The Titan bed tank is labeled as a 50 gallon one, but stamped on the side of it is a warning to not put more than 58 gallons in it to allow for fuel expansion. So really, I can allow for 55 in the tank and 48 in the truck OEM tank which gives me 103 gallons if I choose.
It is not an automatic filler tank. You get a display for your dash that I had installed by the footwell that gives you a button to push. Every time you push the button, it fills 5 gallons into the main tank. So, I can decide when to add fuel to my main tank. I like the freedom that provides. In previous trucks over the years, I have had the ATTA and the TransferFlow tanks with the computer controlled fueling. The Titan in bed tank is totally independent of that.
Loving this tank.

Just an FYI, for anyone that has the S&B 60 gallon tank and the trans has to come out for any reason, the tank needs to be dropped. Having the upper oil pan leak fixed on my truck and the dealer had to drop the S&B as there was not enough room to pull the trans back. And lucky for them, i filled up my truck the day prior... so they had fun moving 500lbs of tank lol

I just had the 60 gallon S&B installed...anyone notice that the DTE fluctuates a good bit now? I did reach out to S&B and they confirmed that with roughly twice the capacity the float will move more and therefore fluctuate a good bit. Just seems like its more jumpy than you'd think? I did have the dealer install the tank - figured that was a safe bet? Just curious if anyone else has seen that...

Ok - maybe jumpy wasn't the right term. The gauge seems steady...the DTE goes down as you drive - but then it will "recalculate" and all of a sudden the DTE jumps back up 50 miles or so. Anyone else see something like that? Almost like the float gets stuck and then moves? I've got a Platinum - so the gauge is electronic and the DTE is right above the gauge so you can stare at it all the time!

Cool - I figured as much. I've got 145K on my truck - and don't really recall it going up and down like that w/ the stock tank...but I'm way more entuned to it now...and double the capacity would seemingly make that more noticeable. It did seem to go from like 20 miles or so to empty...to 0 miles to empty. I was close to home - so tried to figure out my thresholds.

@finchturf I observe the same activity with mine. My driveway has a slope to it. If I park facing downhill the DTE will read 840. Turn the truck around and park it facing uphill and it will read 890 - 905. Once I drive off the property and a few hundred yards on the road it re-calculates the proper DTE. I'm not pleased how it behaves when full but that is when it matters the least for me. I compute fuel stops off of distance on a map and with the odometer, not with the DTE gauge. It is a nice reference but I know in my regular driving in town and on the Interstate mixed I will get 950 - 1,000 miles to a tank. Straight Interstate cruising with cruise control on will net me 1,100 - 1,200 miles per tank. The lie-o-meter in the truck shows 19.x MPG on the Interstate so it is pretty accurate. Around town with mixed driving it is useless.
