Dumb question of the day: Is there any sign of an affordable device (black box) to easily retrieve OBD codes? With translation tables? I mean other than reading the blinks. Since I tend to keep my vehicles for several years, it seems that this would be a great additionn to the tool kit for keeping my 96 F150 & 00 E150 rolling for a few more years.
I just had another poor experience with a shop trying to add work that was absolutely not necessary, so would really like to avoid having to take the truck in when the "check engine" light comes on with no idea of the problem the computer has registered.
I bought mine for $150.00 at AutoZone. If you have a Harbor Freight tools near you, they advertised a cheap one that was about $40. It displayed codes I think. You can look them up online too.
