I recently noticed that when I get on the throttle, to pass or get up a hill, where the turbo kicks in immediatly, a genorous amount of black smoke is discharged. Is this normal? I recently started using power service diesel clean. One tank so far. I have a 99 psd with 167,000 miles. To explain more clearly, It happened when I really got on the throttle, not just mild passing of another car. No other problems or anything. I just happened to look at the rear view mirror, and noticed it. I know that big rigs and tractors commonly blow black smoke. Is this common on power stroke diesels?
Is it modified?, I have a modified truck and blow large amounts of Black smoke when I gun it. It is common, some guys like to see who has the blackest smoke. dont worry about it. if it is stock and you want to get rid of it, try a aftermarket air filter to give the truck more air to breath.
Yes it is modified. It has a super chip, 4in down pipe all the way to the tail. K&N / with an AIR raid induction system. F550 rear springs, 45gallon saddle tank. Overall pretty stock
How long ago did you put the pipe on?? New pipe likes to put out a little bit more smoke when it is getting broken in. How long has it been since you changed your fuel filter? You will smoke a lot more than normal, it doesn't hurt anything, if it is really dirty.
Down pipe 1yr old. Its been 6062 miles on the fuel filter. I change it every other oil change. That makes it 8000 miles per fuel filter (more often in the winter). I have been doing a lot of work in dusty rural Kansas. Also my Cam Position Senser went and I had to replace it in the field.
You know, it might have been doing this for years. I usually look forward when I get on it, just so happens I looked back.... Also could humidity have anything to do with it, thick air.
Your probably right. Just want to keep on top of things with a diesel. If my Ford goes down, I don't think I could bare asking my little brother to use his DODGE. Its too pretty. I may hurt it.
I am in Kansas, around 500 to 1100ft above sea level. I was thinking that with more humidity, moist air, a less favorable combustion situation. I never considered thin air and less O/2.
Either way, not favorable consitions for combustion. Which means more smoke. This is what I get for looking back when leaving a duramax wondering, "Where is the throttle response?" :-)
