I've had my 2014 Expedition with the 5.4L Triton for a week now - it had 58,515 miles when I bought it. The first tank of gas from running around town and back and forth to work (267 miles) gave me 13.2 mpg. After that fill up I put another 248 miles of highway driving at 65 and 75 mph and filled up again - that tank gave me 19.1 mpg. I'm sure there's some odometer error based on GPS speed versus speedometer readings, but that's still a whole lot better than I was expecting. This was all on I-25 and other highways along the Colorado front range.
I plan to calibrate my speedometer and odometer with the GPS and apply appropriate corrections in the future but my question is how typical is this?
I average anywhere from 13.x to 17.x (rarely) mpg with my '11 EL depending on how much highway driving I'm doing and how heavy I am on the pedal. Typically, I get about 15.x mpg and a standard length Expedition gets about 2 mpg better in my experience so 17.x should be easily attainable on a regular basis. To get 19.x I'd say you'd have to be doing a lot more highway driving and go a little easy on the pedal. Nothing kills your mileage faster in these rigs than a heavy foot (in my experience).
That 19 I got may not be typical for me. I filled up just before getting on the freeway and was driving on the flat (not in the mountains) at freeway speeds (65 & 75) to a destination and then back. I used cruise control the whole way. My trips usually involve going up and over the mountains, so that will be another test. All in all though, I'm real pleased with the mileage I'm getting so far.
Update on the mileage. I've calibrated my odometer and discovered it's only off by about 1.4% - not enough to be concerned about. I'm working on a city tank mileage now, driving to/from work and errands around town.
Update on the mileage. Here's my baseine before I put on the chip.
Highway (flat) = 19.1 mpg
Highway (Mt passes) = 17.2 mpg
City (work and around home) = 14.2 mpg
I'll be putting on the power chip and comparing to the baselines above as soon as I can.
We have a 2010 with the 6 speed tranny. My wife drives it primarily as a soccer mom. Stop and go. 1.5 miles to work. Short and or all city trips. She gets 13.x to 14.2 max on a tank.
When we (I) drive on the highway, depending upon wind and speed, I can get 17-19 mpg. These things do ok at 65 mph but more than that and mpg drops pretty quickly.
