1996 Bronco with Dual Shocks, replacing rotted drivers side front shock tower
Any idea what the STOCK bolts held the shock and spring tower in place?
It looks like I am looking at a domed-head carriage bolt that should have a nut on the back side
I run my hand across the back side of the frame rail and feel nothing
Either the bolt is totally rotted off or the frame was tapped for a thread
Im guessing its thru bolt, but I just want to check
You should yes. Maybe get some tri-flow/wd-40 stuff and some heat, but they should come out with the head shaved off.
The frame to motor mount brackets are riveted on as well, and they look to be around the same size rivet. I had to do some grinding down on one side of those rivets, but I eventually got them out by hammering away when I had to swap out the 302 mounts for the 7.3 ones.
I find the easiest way to remove the rest of the rivet is to drill a small hole about halfway through the rivet, stick a drift in the hole, and pound it out with a hammer. It pops right out. I'm not sure why drilling the hole makes all the difference, but it does. I discovered it by accident.
