Hi. I often hear Chevy people touting the Allision (correct spelling?) transmission. I'm not looking for anyone to bash Chevies here. I know this is a Ford forum but I'm sure some of you are familiar with this transmission.
What is the big deal about the Allison transmission and what makes it supposedly so great in Chevy peoples' minds?
I don't have the technical know how for a good discussion, but I've formulated a theory.
It's similar to the reason PSD's are so great. PSD's are built buy a true diesel expert, Navistar (or International for those not familiar with the name). Navistar has been building diesels, heavy duty trucks, and their parts for years. Well Allison has been building heavy duty truck parts for quite a few years themselves. They are known in the trucking industry for those trannies. Much like Dana, Spicer, Muncie, New Process, etc. were(are) known for their trannies/gears in the auto world (read strength).
So when a Chevy guy thinks he's got you because he has an Allison tranny, he may not be basing the argument strictly on fact, but on a reputation, since the Allison tranny in it's GM light truck form hasn't been around too long.
The Allison transmission is a "smart" transmission, it shifts itself to the proper gear to match the job. That is what makes it so great. I have read that the Duramax (6.6L) is an OK diesel, but when matched with the Allison becomes a fantastic truck. Popular Mechanics did a test with it and it did very well with towing and could fly compared to the gasser's. Overall, it doesn't sound like a bad piece of equipment, once they get the bugs out.
