i wrote a couple of days ago about my oil pressure guage not rerading at idle after the engine is warmed uo. i attached a mechanical guage to it and got 30 psi at hot idle and 60 psi on the highway. i decided, on the advice i recieved, to change the sending unit. having done that, i still am having the same problem. now let me get the whole story out. i am also having some idling problems at cold start up where the engine speeds up and slowes down trying to find the proper rpms. sometimes it just cuts off and sometimes it settles down at 600 rpms. i dont know if these are related or not, but while the indicator goes to 0 the engine sounds like it is running rough. i just replaced the rotor button, cap, wires, and plugs within the last 2k miles. i am baffeled as to what to do next. id appreciate any help i can get.
It sounds to me that there is a short somewhere. Where the oil pressure sending unit is making contact with something else that goes to the ECU. When the guage goes to zero, that means it is not getting current from the sensor. I would trace the sensor wires as much as you can. I bet you find two wires melted together somewhere.
Your idle issues and the startup rpm problems my be your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. I replaced mine for the same issues and it fixed all that. My old one was all gunked up with crap. I have heard you can clean it, but since mine was the original one after 152000 miles, I figured it was time for a new one. Its 56.00 from Schucks.com online.
