Hi all ,
I have a 96 Ford Ranger autmatic . Its the 3.0 and 4R44E Tranny . Ive been having the 3rd gear taking a long time to engauge.
It shifts once twice and then motor reves trying to find or pump enough fluid to find third. Over drive seems to be just fine along with fourth.
Could this be a solenoid in in the valve body.If so what one is 3rd.? I thought maybe changing the fluid would help. It didnt it may have made it worse . It s taking longer now to get to third .
How is your fluid level?
A little too high or too low can make a difference.
Did the fluid smell burned or was it brown before you changed it?
Does it go into 1st as soon as you put it in drive or does it seem to take a couple of seconds?
Let us know.
O the fluid was a bit brown .Magnet was about 1/4 inch of grey slimy stuff on it. My dad says thats very fine metal .That dont sound good . But fluid is full .I used dextron III. from Napa. and a Napa Filter . Used 6 quarts and 20 oz I let it drip for 2hours.
