Thanks Rich. I'm not much on the open push pens. They just don't look right to me. I like your reinforcements on the panel. Hope to order some panels by the end of the week. Unfortunately the PO damaged mine severely. The armrest are off of I don't know what, but the install busted out the center of both door panels. Oh well, I'll get around to fixing all the little things.
Do you see the red repair pieces in my black panels? I cut all that out of old door parts panels and then overhauled them because the front side is great and they have the stainless trim.
Correct 73-79 arm rest are available from JY and or vendors that sale reproductions. And folks on here have parts also.
Also ck out Jeffs Graveyard, National Parts Depot, Blue Oval Truck Parts, Macs.
That reinforcement is just some thin gauge sheet metal and a little cutting and bending.
What about paint for the door panels. I've seen a few that are two tone and I would like to do that. What is a good spray for it. I've not tried painting this kind of material. What have you all used?
I used SEM vinyl paint. The best I could find they were the only one to closely match stock color.
I did similarly to what 77&79 says above. Here is how mine turned out.
I did not replace the arm rest. No probs with the paint over 6 months. we'll see how it goes thru the hot summer.
do everything you're going to do w the panels off before being done w the panel install. I have heard you can use a hacksaw blade to cut thru the plastic GM style tabs. I don't see you being able to pull the tabs out without breaking the panel though.
Thanks for the help thus far fellas. tndalas, your panel looks real nice. I think I'll try that brand if I can find the color I'm after.
Hey Rich, do you know who makes the panels for NPD. There prices seem to be in the middle. I noticed they have the ones with the chrome on the bottom, the push through and the regular panels. Regardless of the ones I end up with, I think I'm gonna go ahead and reinforce them. Seems like a good precaution to me.
As far as the ones that mount with push pins from the outside, you need to get the same color push pins as the door panel. That might be a hard task, or SEM paint again.
And on the same above style the arm rest part is molded IN it and is hard as the rest of the panel and not removable.
I gave a set of those door panels away for the shipping cost.
For any interested, NPD uses DC door panels and sells them for the same price as DC. Macs looks like DC from photos but I have not seen in person their quality or if it is DC repos. They are about 30 dollars higher. I did order a set from NPD because I can get them in 2 or 3 days and DC said minimum of a week. I should have them by Friday at the latest and I'll post some pics of them so any interested can see the craftsmanship.
